Custodian

SUMMARY/PURPOSE: The Custodian position provides custodial services for St. Joan of Arc facilities and grounds.

EMPLOYER: Fr. Michael Joly- Pastor of Saint Joan of Arc Catholic Church

SUPERVISOR: The Custodian is supervised by the Facilities Manager.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:The Custodian works collaboratively and professionally with the Pastor, staff, parish leadership, volunteers, and community.

RESPONSIBILITIES & TASKS:
The position of Custodian is a regular full-time 40 hours per week, non-exempt position. The position requires basic electrical, mechanical and plumbing knowledge and certification. The position is entitled to leave time as prescribed in the diocesan policy manual. Church Buildings: Regularly dust & polish furniture and wood clad pilasters in the worship space; seating areas must be cleaned (wooded areas polished). Repair kneelers, as necessary. Regularly vacuum carpets and rugs in all facilities. Spot clean carpets as needed. Regularly Damp mop uncarpeted floors. Mop and buff floor in Commons, corridors, classrooms, etc. as needed; wax floors as necessary. Regularly clean/dust all baseboards. Regularly clean windows. Regularly clean kitchen/kitchenette counter tops and sinks. Regularly move and clean furniture. Regularly clean/disinfect all bathrooms - toilets, sinks. Fill soap dispensers. Replace batteries in air fresheners. Clean shower as needed. Regularly sweep/wet mop with bleach all bathroom floors. Replenish supplies in all bathrooms. Empty trash from all facilities (i.e., church, offices, kitchens) to outside trash container. Clean and wash trash cans as needed. Replace lights as necessary; coordinate with external agencies for those areas not easily accessible (i.e. center lights in worship space). Replace HVAC filters. Ensure gutters are clean and water flows. Ensure proper operation and cleanliness of baptismal font. Ensure rectory garage remains clean and organized.

Grounds (Church, Parish Office, Rectory, sheds): Maintain litter free parish grounds, to include, but not limited to walkways, roadways, parking lots, fields, and drainage ditches. Clear walkways and entrance ways of fallen leaves and other debris. Clear snow from walkways and entrance ways. Coordinate with external agencies for snow removal from parking areas. Power wash church buildings, fences, walls, walkways, and decks (as needed). Coordinate with external agency for power washing those areas not safely accessible (i.e., upper portions of church, bell tower etc.). Replace lights over entrances/exits, along walkways, and in parking areas as necessary. Coordinate with external agencies for those areas not easily accessible. All trash receptacles should be placed outdoors the day before scheduled pickup, and returned the same day as pickup. Monitor drainage.

General Responsibilities:
Maintains an OSHA approved supply of furniture polish, Windex, all-purpose cleaners, cloths in a closet accessible to staff members. Maintain all cleaning equipment in a safe and working order. Perform routine upkeep to maintain the efficiency of the work environment. This includes changing light bulbs and fuses; organizing supplies; replacing light fixtures, repairing locks, etc. Perform light repairs on equipment. In the event equipment requires repair beyond custodian's expertise, arrange for repairs or obtain permission to replace malfunctioning equipment. Monitor inventory and order supplies as needed. Setup and reconfigure rooms (per-work orders). Perform mechanical and plumbing repairs within capabilities. Paint, stain, and refresh exteriors. Assist with indoor and outdoor creche setup and tear down. Additional duties as assigned by the Pastor.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent with a Technical or Trade School Certificate preferred. A valid state driver's license is required. Other qualifications include two to three years in maintenance upkeep and repair including some plumbing, carpentry, and electrical; ability to perform physical requirements; good organization and problem solving skills; strong time management skills; be highly motivated and able to work independently; good interpersonal and customer service skills; basic working knowledge of computer software packages, and knowledge of procedures and practices, tools and equipment used in maintenance and chemical cleaning supplies.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Position may require lifting and exposure to chemicals, dust, dirt, and bacteria. Painting and ladder climbing may also be required. The position may require reporting to work before or remaining after regular office hours. Tasks must be performed according to the time frame provided so as to avoid the spread of undesirable smells, bacteria, rodents, and/or insects.

PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL:
The employee is generally evaluated annually according to the appraisal process available from the Office of Human Resources.

FLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT
