Job Description

The Devotional & Newsletter Marketing Specialist is the steward of The Catholic Company's signature devotional email programs - Morning Offering, Night Prayer, and Get Fed - which reach hundreds of thousands of subscribers daily. By managing and crafting these faith-filled newsletters, this role nurtures the spiritual growth of our audience while subtly driving engagement with our brands and sponsored content. The specialist ensures that each publication is prayerful, inspiring, and aligned with Catholic teachings, all while meeting the company's goals for audience engagement and modest revenue opportunities through sponsorships.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Content Creation & Curation: Write and/or curate daily and weekly devotional content for the Morning Offering, Night Prayer, and Get Fed newsletters. This includes selecting scripture verses, saint quotes, prayers, and creating brief reflections or commentary that resonate with readers and reflect a genuine Catholic voice. Ensure all content is theologically sound and appropriate for the liturgical calendar (e.g., highlighting relevant feasts, seasons, and themes).
- Newsletter Production: Build each newsletter issue using the email marketing platform - formatting text, inserting images or video links (when applicable), and ensuring a visually appealing, easy-to-read layout. Proofread all content and test emails to guarantee accuracy and proper rendering on different devices.
- Schedule & Deployment Management: Maintain an editorial calendar for all devotional newsletters, coordinating send times (e.g., early morning distribution for Morning Offering, nightly distribution for Night Prayer) and ensuring consistency (newsletters go out on time every day without lapse). Adjust scheduling as needed around major Church feasts or when special editions are planned.
- Integration of Sponsorships and Promotions: Collaborate with The Catholic Company's marketing and sales teams to include light commercial elements in the newsletters without detracting from their devotional nature. This may involve integrating a sponsored message, a featured product, or a subtle call-to-action (such as a link to a related article or religious item) in a manner that feels organic and respectful to the reader. Manage any sponsor relationships by coordinating deliverables (ad copy, tracking links, etc.) and scheduling sponsored slots per agreements.
- Audience Engagement & Growth: Monitor subscriber growth and engagement for each newsletter. Work on initiatives to grow the subscriber list (such as cross-promotions on our websites or social media, and encouraging email forwarding/sharing among readers). Pay attention to reader feedback or questions (for example, if subscribers reply with comments or if there are community discussions on social media about the content) and adjust content strategy to better serve the audience's spiritual needs.
- Performance Tracking & Optimization: Track key email metrics for the newsletters - open rates, click-through rates (especially on any links or promotions), unsubscribe rates, etc. Analyze which types of content within the devotional (e.g., saint of the day, meditation, trivia from Get Fed) drive engagement. Use this data to optimize subject lines, content placement, and the length of the newsletter. Conduct occasional A/B tests (such as testing different subject lines or send times) to improve performance while maintaining reverence in content delivery.
- Collaboration & Compliance: Work closely with the broader content and marketing teams to ensure the devotional content aligns with larger campaigns or themes (for instance, coordinating a special prayer email when The Catholic Company is running a campaign for a charitable cause or a product launch tied to a devotional item). Ensure all email practices comply with CAN-SPAM and other relevant email regulations, and that subscriber data is handled respectfully and in line with privacy policies.

Knowledge / Critical Skills:
- Exceptional writing and editing skills, especially in crafting inspirational and devotional copy. Ability to adopt a tone that is prayerful, engaging, and accessible, while upholding doctrinal accuracy and respect for Catholic tradition.
- Strong understanding of the Catholic faith, liturgical year, and devotional practices - able to select content that is appropriate to the day (e.g., saints' feast days, liturgical seasons) and meaningful to a Catholic audience.
Experience with email marketing tools and newsletter production. Comfortable with formatting emails, using HTML/CSS for simple layout tweaks if needed, and working with email templates.
- Attention to detail and proofreading prowess - ensuring that every newsletter is free of errors and broken links, as well as visually consistent with brand standards.
- Good organizational and time-management skills to handle a daily production schedule. Able to work ahead and plan content in advance, while also being nimble if changes are needed last-minute (for example, adding a prayer intention for an unexpected event).
- Basic analytical skills to interpret email engagement metrics and user feedback. Proficiency with Excel or dashboard tools to track subscriber numbers and performance over time.
- Collaborative mindset: ability to work with other writers, designers, and marketers. Open to feedback from theological reviewers or editors if applicable, and willing to coordinate with team members who manage product promotions or sponsor relationships included in the newsletters.
- Creativity and initiative - continually brainstorming ways to keep content fresh and spiritually enriching (for example, introducing a new segment or topic in the newsletter) and to gently encourage readers to explore our products or services that complement their faith journey.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
- Subscriber Engagement: High open rates and click-through rates on the Morning Offering, Night Prayer, and Get Fed emails, indicating that content is compelling and keeps readers interested daily.
- List Growth and Retention: Steady growth in the number of subscribers to each devotional newsletter, coupled with low unsubscribe rates - reflecting both effective acquisition efforts and strong content that retains readers.
- Sponsorship/Promotion Effectiveness: Performance of integrated promotional content, measured by click-through on sponsored links or conversion on featured products (when such elements are included), while maintaining positive reader feedback. Success here means finding a balance where revenue opportunities are realized without degrading the user experience or trust.
- Content Quality & Consistency: Internal review metrics or qualitative feedback on the newsletters' quality (e.g., reader testimonials, replies, or social media mentions praising the content). Also, the consistency of delivery - ensuring that the newsletter is sent on schedule every day with minimal technical issues or missed sends.
- Cross-Department Alignment: Successful coordination with other teams, seen in instances such as aligning a devotional theme with a wider campaign (and receiving positive results), or smoothly incorporating a last-minute special intention or announcement at the request of leadership. (This indicates agility and teamwork, though more qualitative, it can be noted through completed projects and leadership feedback.)

Physical Demands / Environmental Factors:
- Predominantly an office-based role involving extended periods at a computer (writing and editing content, managing email platform).
- May require flexibility in schedule to accommodate the timing of newsletter sends - for example, preparing early morning content or finalizing an issue in the evening - especially during important liturgical seasons or when urgent prayer requests arise.
- Minimal physical requirements beyond standard office work; the role centers on mental focus and creative output in a quiet workspace.
